Moon News: March Full Worm Moon

This month's full moon is the worm moon, named for the time of year when the worms are beginning to come out of hibernation after the winter, but blossoms aren’t quite ready to bloom on the surface of the earth. We are on the brink of spring up here, but under the surface is where the movement is really going on! It’s also the first eclipse of the year taking place in Virgo, and if the skies are clear, we all should be able to get an excellent view on March 14th from 2:30-3:30 am (that’s the night of March 13th if you’re staying up late to see it. The morning of the 14th if you get up early.)

Lunar eclipses always represent the beginning/ending of the always turning cycle of nature and learning. The moon plunges into the dark, and even frightens humanity with the look of blood on her, but those who work with the cycles of nature know that a moment of sudden darkness is not a cataclysm, but merely a necessary pause in the drum of normal life, reminding us to look around and remember we are alive, embodied, living real lives, making real choices.

The shadow on the moon means it’s a great time to do some shadow work, and the eclipse in Virgo means that work could revolve around unnecessary rigidity, perfectionism, or workaholism.

Our coven ritual at the moon circle this month will be focused on the theme “Connected Minds” and is the first of several moon circles planned to cultivate the unity of the coven. I have attached the text of the ritual below as a preview for those attending the moon circle, or for those who may wish to participate from home. We will recite the ritual text together and I will pass out pomegranate seeds to eat symbolizing both the shadows of the blood moon, and the metaphorical spring planting of seeds within ourselves.

After the ritual, we will have some cakes and ale, plus craft time! We’ll be making mini vision boards, the size of a credit card so they can fit in your wallet, a pocket altar, or any other small space. There will be lots of supplies for collaging and drawing, and if you’d like yours laminated, you can send it home with me, and I can laminate (the original or a photocopy) it, and get it back to you asap.

Blessed be, everyone, I’ll see you under the light of the blood moon!

Connected Minds Lunar Eclipse Ritual

  1. Incense cleansing

  2. Call the quarters

  3. Open the circle

Moon Priestess:

The mother moon tonight goes through a time of darkness, and bares her blood.

All in unison:

As she passes through the shadow and again into the light so shall we.

As the worms wriggle in the dirt, coming out of hibernation, so must we.

As the smallest seed, still frozen, holds all the potential of growth, so do we.

Now is the time for finding strength. Now is the time to grow together.

Moon Priestess:

Now is the time when the mother asks us to link like a pack of wolves in step, bare our bloody teeth, and rise again to the challenge.

All in unison:
We hear you goddess.
We follow your lead.
We plunge into the dark and out again, made new.

4. Eating of the pomegranate seeds.

Moon priestess:
You are new. We close the circle now, and go forward with a greater understanding.

5. Close the circle.
